California Takes Proactive Measures to Prevent Workplace Violence

In California, we are shifting from a reactive approach to a proactive stance in addressing deadly incidents of workplace violence. To support this initiative, the California State Senate enacted Senate Bill 553 (SB 553), which was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom and officially took effect on July 1, 2024.

Under CA SB 553, all businesses, schools, places of worship, and public venues are now required to develop and implement a Workplace Violence Prevention Plan (WVPP). This mandate is designed to reduce injuries, fatalities, and ensure that all acts of violence occurring on the premises are properly reported and addressed.

The law empowers Cal/OSHA (California Division of Occupational Safety and Health) to enforce compliance. Employers who fail to meet the requirements of SB 553 may face citations of up to $150,000, depending on the severity and nature of the violation.

This legislation marks a significant step forward in protecting workers and the public, reinforcing California’s commitment to safety and accountability across all sectors.
