A family’s Halloween party transitions from a festive gathering to a DEADLY EVENT

“This was yet another senseless act of GUN VIOLENCE that has taken the lives of two and has left many others seriously injured,” Sheriff Burnis Wilkins of Robeson County Sheriff Office said in a statement after the shooting. “What makes this even more disturbing is the involvement of teenagers, alcohol and GUNS at a large house party,” he continued. “Dozens of videos posted from the party on SOCIAL MEDIA – simply show that alcohol and guns don’t mix, the consequences are once again tragic.”
A family in Fairmont, North Carolina hosted what was intended to be a safe and festive Halloween party ahead of October 31st. However, the celebration took a tragic turn when gunfire erupted, resulting in two fatalities and injuries to eleven others.
RCSO deputies have not made any arrests or identified a motive for these incidents involving firearms. The two who were killed were related, one 49-year-old and the other 16 years old. The injured victims ranged from 18 to 43 as reported by the Sheriff Office.
This incident does not appear to be workplace violence or domestic violence, based on the information currently available. However, looking at the situation at hand makes you wonder how these incidents arise and what takes them to the level of DEADLY FORCE?
This commentary addresses violent acts by teenagers, their use of firearms, and their apparent lack of fear in causing serious harm or death to others.
Active Shooter Assessment and Assurance (ASAA) addresses concern for those in the workplace (violence issues) and those in domestic violence arenas. It is totally impossible to say what another person will do or capable of doing but for certain, “life is too precious and cannot be replaced by and awards, means or ways”. We must protect each other equally at all times. The causes of these incidents remain unclear, yet their escalation has resulted in fatal consequences.
In California, State Senator Dave Cortese played a key role in drafting and advancing Senate Bill 553 (SB 553), a landmark law aimed at preventing workplace violence. The bill requires employers—including those operating in schools, public venues, and places of worship—to implement comprehensive violence prevention plans as part of their safety protocols. To bring the bill into effect, Governor Newsom approved, signed and enacted this mandated Bill effective July 1, 2024 for all to comply. He assigned Cal/OSHA to monitor compliance and gave them the authority to cite those who fail to create training for their employees, proactive measures, preventative solutions and preparedness for these unforeseen incidents.
Active Shooter Assessment and Assurance may be of assistance in creating and establishing a plan to be proactive, prepared to prevent these haphazards from occurring or escalating. This preparation protocol may impact the aftermath of death or injury elsewhere in locations like a normal and safe house party.
